Pinguicula: Butterworts
A small carnivorous plant, Butterworts are found throughout most of the Northern Hemisphere. The plants are usually a few inches diameter at maturity. The leaves tend to grow flat to the ground in a rosette fashion which are slightly upturned at the edges. The leaves are pale green to yellow depending on the variety. The leaves are covered in thousands of microscopic glandular hairs that produce a small sticky drop on the end. Small insects (gnats and fruit flies) are drawn to this and become trap in the glue like substance. Once trapped, a second set of glands produces the enzymes and acids and digestion begins.
Pinguicula primuliflora: ButterwortPinguicula primuliflora, commonly known as the Primrose Butterwort, is a species of carnivorous plant belonging to the genus Pinguicula. . The typical variety forms a white flower in blooming. Like other butterworts,
it has sticky adhesive leaves which attract, capture and digest
arthropod prey in order to supply the plant with nutrients such as nitrogen not found in the nutrient poor, acidic soil that it grows in. Its name derives from the fact it is usually the first one to flower in the spring. It grows pretty light violet-pink flowers. Protect from freezing.
